You can have natural wedding photos in Cancun without knowing how to pose. At Xavier Bau Weddings, we combine guided portraits with documentary photography and film for destination weddings in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
If being photographed makes you self-conscious, tell us how much direction you prefer and which moments matter most. The real celebrations below, at ATELIER Playa Mujeres and Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres, show different ways to include movement, closeness and expression in your photographs.
See portraits and moments within a real wedding

Lindsey and Luciano’s beach photograph includes movement and the setting. Sarah and Gunnar’s staircase portrait brings the frame closer to the couple. Those are two different portrait possibilities; the right choice depends on what feels comfortable to you.
When you open a gallery, look beyond one favorite image. Notice the couple portraits, expressions during the ceremony and interactions with guests. A complete story helps you judge whether the photographer’s approach suits both the photographs you want to frame and the moments you want to remember.
Explore Lindsey and Luciano’s wedding photographs and Sarah and Gunnar’s ATELIER wedding. Save two or three favorites and describe what attracts you: closeness, movement, expression or the surroundings.
Three simple ways to begin your portraits
- Walk together. Choose a clear, comfortable path and move at your own pace. Look toward each other when it feels natural; you do not have to hold a smile throughout.
- Pause close together. Hold hands or share an embrace if that feels right for you. Your photographer can adjust the light and framing while keeping the direction simple.
- Take a quiet moment. Talk, breathe and let your expression settle. You can ask for a pause or a different suggestion whenever you need one.

A dramatic dip or veil photograph is another option, only if you enjoy it and the movement is comfortable. Tell us when a suggestion does not feel like you. Our veil photography guide shows how that accessory can change a portrait.
Make the setting comfortable before choosing the pose
For a Cancun or Riviera Maya resort wedding, pick a small number of nearby portrait locations. Check access, privacy, walking surfaces and how your clothing feels there. A crowded beach may suit you less than a quiet indoor corner; your photographer can review the light in either setting.
Build in time for walking, water and a short pause. If privacy matters, discuss a portrait window away from arriving guests. A first look is one possibility, but you can also reserve private time after the ceremony. Agree on the plan with your coordinator.
Leave space for the moments you cannot rehearse

Tell your photographer about the people and moments you value, then let the ceremony unfold. Gunnar’s expression and the celebration below show why a gallery needs more than couple portraits. You do not have to face the camera throughout your wedding.

How we balance guided portraits and documentary coverage
For portraits, we can help with where to stand, how to use the light and a simple movement to begin. Tell us whether you prefer clear instructions or fewer interruptions. During vows, speeches and conversations, the emphasis shifts to observing the people and reactions around you.
That balance should be agreed before the wedding. Share the photographs you love and anything you would rather skip, whether that is a dramatic dip, a public portrait session or repeated requests to kiss. Your preferences belong in the photography plan.
A relaxed 30-minute portrait plan
This is an illustrative window for couple portraits, to adapt with your photographer and coordinator. It excludes family groups, preparation and long transfers; it is not a fixed requirement or a promise about how many photographs you will receive.
- First 5 minutes: settle into the location, check clothing and begin with a comfortable walk or standing portrait.
- Next 10 minutes: make portraits together with a few simple suggestions and room to pause.
- Next 10 minutes: try a nearby second background if access, light and comfort allow, or stay where you are.
- Final 5 minutes: take a breath, check that your priorities are covered and return to your guests.
Allow additional time when walking distances, mobility needs or separate film sequences require it. Your wedding date, ceremony schedule and chosen locations determine where this window fits.
Coordinate your Cancun resort, planner and video team
- Access and privacy: confirm permission to use the chosen spaces and ask whether they will be shared with other guests. Check any outside-vendor entry requirements before the day.
- One shared schedule: agree on the portrait window with your coordinator, photographer and videographer. Tell both creative teams how much time you want away from the celebration so they can plan together.
- A usable alternative: select an indoor location you would enjoy if outdoor portraits cannot go ahead. Our Cancun wedding rain plan explains what to confirm with your venue.
Questions from couples who feel awkward in photos
Do we need to practice posing?
No posing experience is required. Share examples and preferences beforehand. A brief conversation about direction can be more useful than memorizing a long sequence of positions.
Can we have elegant portraits and candid photographs?
Yes. Reserve a short, agreed portrait window and allow the rest of the day to include observation of your ceremony, conversations and celebration. Discuss that balance before booking.
What if only one of us enjoys being photographed?
Share both preferences. Plan a few portraits together, optional individual photographs and breaks that suit you both. Neither person needs to perform a gesture they dislike.
Do we need an engagement session first?
It is optional. If you would enjoy getting used to the process, ask about a separate session and its availability and cost. It is not a requirement for your wedding coverage.
Can we keep our couple portraits private?
We can discuss a quieter location and a time with fewer people nearby. Privacy depends on the venue’s permissions and other guests, so confirm access before relying on a beach, staircase or shared resort space being empty.
How much time should we set aside?
Use the sample 30-minute window as a starting point for discussion. Add family portraits and travel separately, then review the plan with your photographer and videographer. You may need more or less time depending on your priorities.
